Announcer – 0:00: Mason Vera Paine.

Mason Paine – 0:01: The month of April has come to an end and Google trends expert Charity Mende speaks about this past month’s top trends. Thanks for joining me, Charity.

Charity Mhende – 0:09: Thanks for having me.

Mason Paine – 0:11: So tell me, month of April, what was all trending?

Charity Mhende – 0:14: The month was super busy and of course, one of my favorite topics that’s been trending is marathons. The past weekend in New York, people just ran the Brooklyn half. So we’ve seen a lot of interest in topics around sports. One of the top trending questions was, do people who run marathons know they don’t have to? That was the top trending related question. And actually people were also searching for things like do people walk marathons? Do people run marathons without stopping? So it was all about the sports this past month.

Mason Paine – 0:49: I’m curious, was there any particular shoe that was trending for marathons? I’m guessing you can’t just use anything.

Charity Mhende – 0:55: Well, people actually come to Google every day to search different topics and, you know, marathons and running was definitely one of them. But one of the interesting ones that was also coming up is gifting. People were searching for lots of different apparel related gifting searches in the run up to things like Mother’s Day. So one of the things that I loved seeing was that people were searching for things like Mother’s Day gift ideas, graduation gift ideas, and wedding present gift ideas all spiking by 5,000%. So I know I’m eyeing up some running shoes for my mom because she’s out there trying to get her steps.

Mason Paine – 1:33: In, you know, for my mom, I’ve kind of stopped trying to get her things because she gets her own things. And apparently she’s a better shopper for herself than I am. And she always gets upset when I get her stuff. So I’m like, you know what I told my sister this year? We should just take her shopping and then we should go somewhere really fancy to eat afterwards. Right. Like making an experience.

Charity Mhende – 1:57: That sounds like a great idea. And actually, you know, one of the things that I love about Google shopping is like, it makes shopping super easy. Specifically if your mom’s looking for any deals or if you wanted to get her something for Mother’s Day on a very specific budget, you can actually go on shopping.google.com and there is a personalized deal page that shows you different options that she might like, but also you might point her to it so she can make the shopping journey easy for herself.

Mason Paine – 2:25: Absolutely. And also talking about spending money. Coachella. Coachella was in April. Was there any trends for that we.

Charity Mhende – 2:32: Saw a lot of interest within the whole Coachella bracket. Specifically, it saw the highest search interest in the past month than it’s ever been since 2018. People were also searching for Addison Rae, which rose by 650% after her surprise appearance. And her Coachella outfit was also a breakout search.

Mason Paine – 2:54: I’m a little curious. Have you ever been to Coachella?

Charity Mhende – 2:57: I unfortunately have not. The one Coachella that I should have gone to was the one that Beyonce went to because that looked like it was phenomenal.

Mason Paine – 3:05: Isn’t it always in hindsight? Like this year I was like, ah, you know, I don’t want to spend the money. And then I see like, Missy Elliot was there, Green Day was there, and I was like all this other stuff and I’m like, it could have been an experience. But then I’m thinking, man, those tickets are really expensive.

Charity Mhende – 3:21: They keep raising the bar. And it’s exciting for people like me who watch online. But yeah, definitely. Hindsight is always 2020.

Mason Paine – 3:29: Was there anything odd that was trending in April?

Charity Mhende – 3:34: Yeah, one of the things that came up in the past month was ice bucket challenges back, apparently. So the Ice Bucket challenge saw a five year high in batches. And we also saw people searching for. Is the Ice Bucket Challenge still going on? Which was a breakout search. If you didn’t know. 11 years ago, the ice bucket challenge was for the ALC. Now it’s back. People are raising funds for youth mental health. So it’s a really great throwback that’s come back in a new way.

Mason Paine – 4:04: That is actually really cool. I didn’t even know that was a thing going on. Wait, so it just stopped? I didn’t even realize it. I kind of always assumed that it kept going. Like anything with donations, year by year, it just kind of kept going, but it. It didn’t.

Charity Mhende – 4:17: Yeah, well, apparently it all started off with usc, South Carolina. So, yeah, something’s happening over there. And it’s really cool to see that people are searching for the challenge. People also searching for nominated meaning as a breakout search related to the Iceberg challenge. So it’s really a lot of people curious about how to get involved.

Mason Paine – 4:38: Nifty. Let me see. Oh, you know what? I’m always interested in the food. Was there any food that was trending in April?

Charity Mhende – 4:44: A girl after my own heart. So search interest in pickled flavor is currently a record high this past month. Specifically, people are searching for things like pickled deviled eggs, which doubled in searches. Pickled ramps recipe, which sounds like something I don’t quite know. But also people are searching for is it okay to drink pickle juice and pickle juice popsicles. So lots of real interest around pickles.

Mason Paine – 5:11: I love pickles. During the pandemic, all I did was make sourdough bread and pickles.

Charity Mhende – 5:18: I love that. I mean, I make a pretty mean spicy margarita with lots of different pickled things. So I definitely love seeing that. This is spiking.

Mason Paine – 5:28: Right? You know, I thought for a second when you talked about pickles was spiking that it was Popeyes chicken. Cause I keep seeing that commercial during the NBA finals right now. And I was like, wait, it’s that good? The Popeyes pickle menu.

Charity Mhende – 5:45: Talking about food. There was also a lot of search interest around Easter related food. So people were searching for Easter side dishes like beet salad, potato grassin spring pasta salad. All of this talk is making me really hungry. But yeah, food is always a fun topic on online.

Mason Paine – 6:04: Absolutely. All the weird trends and the weird viral stuff. Like sometimes I’m just curious, can I even make it? And if I can’t, where can I buy it? So you’re absolutely correct. Like the food stuff always gets me going too. Well, Charity, thank you so much for joining me. I really appreciate you being here. And for those listening, where can they find out all about these trends so.

Charity Mhende – 6:25: You can explore Google trends yourself by going to google.com trends and seeing what’s trending around the world.
