Vinyl’s From The Past: 16:12 to 20:55
The term EDM did not become a permanent genre until the 2000’s. In the 80’s there were a number of influential artists creating electronic songs. One of them was the Pet Shop Boys.
Neil Tennant and Keyboardist Chris Lowe are a London-based duo who have made their mark in the music industry since their formation in 1981. Crafting an eclectic blend of pop, electronic and dance music. The Pet Shop Boys provided much more than just entertainment to their listeners – often including socially conscious messages about love, society and politics which earned them recognition globally. They are known for many classic hits like “It’s a Sin” to “Go West”. Another one of their greatest hits is “West End Girls” because of its social commentary. Take a listen to it here.
West End Girls was released in 1984 and it was about class and inner-city pressure. This song was labeled by the UK Guardian as the number one greatest single. Songs like this and others from the 80’s based on modern standards are not considered EDM but they were innovative and influential during their time to help create the genre of EDM we have today. That’s it for Vinyl’s from the past, now let’s get back to more music.
