[00:00:02] – Mason Paine: Super Bowl 57 was one of the biggest sporting events this past weekend. Millions of fans watched the game commercials in Half Time Show. Google trends expert Annanya Raghavan speaks about some of the top trends during the big game. Thanks for joining me, Ananya.
[00:00:16] – Annanya Raghavan: Yeah, thank you for having me.
[00:00:18] – Mason Paine: All right, we just went through Super Bowl 57. I have to ask, were you excited about it?
[00:00:23] – Annanya Raghavan: I was super stoked coming into it because I’m an Eagles fan. So it’s always great when your team is playing in the big game. Obviously, not the result I would have wanted, but I got to admit, it was a great game.
[00:00:39] – Mason Paine: Oh, man, I’m not a Chiefs or an Eagle fan, but I had to choose because obviously, if your team doesn’t make it, you have to make a choice. And I put all my money, my fictional money, obviously, on the Eagles because I thought that they were going to win. I was like, they had a phenomenal season. They looked really good going in. I was like, There’s no way the Chiefs are going to it, and they won.
[00:01:03] – Annanya Raghavan: The Eagles felt like a team of destiny coming into it. And I guess not. Guess I read the cards wrong, but it’s all right. It was a great game. Half off to the teeth.
[00:01:17] – Mason Paine: Man, I have to say that last call, though, one of the things that I looked up is the NFL rigged. Did that trend at all or was that just for me?
[00:01:27] – Annanya Raghavan: No, we actually did see huge spikes in search interests. Not necessarily rigged, but is the NFL scripted, especially after I believe it was Arian Foster had his comments on the radio heading into Super Bowl Week that the NFL is scripted and pre planned out. So especially when you get a controversial call like that, I think people are going to wonder. But my two cents are that the Chief just played an overall better game and they deserve to win.
[00:02:02] – Mason Paine: Absolutely. They got that win. They did deserve it. I just as a sports fan, when a ref makes a call like that towards the end of the game, I feel like it impacts the game more than if they had made those types of calls in the beginning. And maybe as a ref should slow down a bit on calls like that and just let things play out. I don’t know.
[00:02:25] – Annanya Raghavan: No, I agree. And like you said, with seeing those trending searches after the game, that’s not what you want the conversation to be about because it takes away from what was otherwise a fantastic game of football.
[00:02:42] – Mason Paine: Absolutely. And I think Mahomes, he got the MVP for it, right? I mean, that wasn’t even on there. I had to look it up.
[00:02:48] – Annanya Raghavan: Yeah, he did win Super Bowl MVP. He was also the top search player from that game, followed by his teammate, Travis Kelsey.
[00:02:56] – Mason Paine: Oh, wow. That’s nice. When it comes to the commercials, I have to ask, what is the number one trending commercial?
[00:03:04] – Annanya Raghavan: So the number one commercial based on Game Day views on YouTube was the booking. Com, Melissa McCarthy, Somewhere Anywhere. Following that, number two was T Mobile’s New Year New Neighbor commercial with John Travolta. And coming in at the number three spot by Game Day views was the Sketchers and Snoop Dogg commercial.
[00:03:25] – Mason Paine: Oh, wow. Oh, man. I’m shocked that the number three was the Sketchers Snoop Dogg. I really was expecting it to be the Stalone one where they were sneezing on the Stalone face. That was hilarious. Dora the Explorer is like, Don’t sneeze.
[00:03:44] – Annanya Raghavan: Yeah, I was surprised by the schedule of two. But overall, I was very impressed with the commercials. I love the farmer’s dog one. I have a dog lover myself, it just pulls on the heart strings.
[00:03:57] – Mason Paine: Oh, the heart strings. That’s so true. Do you remember? Oh, what is that commercial? It’s the one where it’s like, Is it touched by an angel? And then it was a beer commercial.
[00:04:08] – Annanya Raghavan: Yeah. Oh, so good.
[00:04:11] – Mason Paine: Oh, man, there were so many good commercials. And as I was watching Super Bowl, and obviously you’re watching all the commercials, it dawned on me that these are like multimillion dollar productions that I’m watching right now. Was there any trend to see which was the highest cost commercial during Super Bowl?
[00:04:31] – Annanya Raghavan: Yeah, we saw huge spikes the week leading into the game and during the game itself. How much does a 30 second Super Bowl commercial cost? Or what is the most expensive Super Bowl commercial of all time. And so it is a big day for businesses and advertisements because it’s something that everybody across the country is tuning into.
[00:04:56] – Mason Paine: Yeah, definitely. And then you see some big names Ben Stiller. I love that they did the one with Pepsi. And he’s like, Is this acting or is it good? I was like, Good point. Good point, right?
[00:05:09] – Annanya Raghavan: Yeah. I just loved the throwbacks that we saw throughout the night with the clueless commercial. So many nostalgia effect.
[00:05:19] – Mason Paine: I forgot about the clueless one. You’re right. That was amazing. And at the end, he was like, Aren’t you a little bit old for high school? So I’m curious, what was your take on the half time? Did you enjoy it as much as I did?
[00:05:34] – Annanya Raghavan: I loved it. I am a huge Rihanna fan, so just seeing her return to the stage was really exciting for me. And of course, the moment that everyone was talking about and searching for the top question on Super Bowl 57 was, Is Rihanna pregnant? And it was confirmed after the game that she was. And so, congrats to her on baby number two. But she was just playing hit after hit. It was a lot of fun.
[00:06:03] – Mason Paine: When they started all of the lights, I held my breath. I really thought Kid Cudi and Kanye were going to pop out. Just because I have this fantasy in my head that they were just going to come out on stage. And I was like, Oh, my God. It’s going to be great. It didn’t happen. But overall, it was a really great show. I really loved it.
[00:06:22] – Annanya Raghavan: Yeah. And to that point, all of the lights was the most like Rihanna lyrics during that show. And since Jay Z was there, I thought he might come out during Run This Town. But Rihanna killed it on her own. She didn’t need the support.
[00:06:37] – Mason Paine: Oh, absolutely. I was so scared because I was watching it with my friend. And you see Rihanna on the platform. I’m like, What’s that thing hanging down from behind her? She was strapped to the platform. And I was like, Oh, my God. And then we’re staring at her. I’m like, Is she pregnant? I was like, She’s pregnant on a floating platform? I’m like, Good for her, but I’m scared. I’d be like, I’m on the floor. I’m not moving. I need dancers above me, but not Ri Ri. She knows what she wants.
[00:07:06] – Annanya Raghavan: I mean, you and me both. There’s no way off 50 feet above the ground. Not pregnant, let alone pregnant.
[00:07:16] – Mason Paine: I like it. You’re like, Even if I was not pregnant, I wouldn’t be that high off the ground.
[00:07:21] – Annanya Raghavan: No.
[00:07:24] – Mason Paine: No, I wouldn’t either. I think at one point when they did a closeup and she started to really groove, you could see the platform sway. And I was like, Stop moving, Ri an na.
[00:07:34] – Annanya Raghavan: Yeah, she killed it.
[00:07:38] – Mason Paine: But. What about other people? Because I know during Super Bowl, they were showing people, the famous people that were in the stands. Did Elon Musk sitting next to Rupert Murdoch, did that trend at all? I’m just curious.
[00:07:54] – Annanya Raghavan: Elon was in the top list of most of the celebrities that attended the game. He was, I believe, coming in at number six. But the number one celebrity at the game, continuing this trend of Rihanna, was ASAP Rocky there to support her. And coming in at number two is big time Eagles fan Bradley Cooper, who was at the game in the box with Eagles runner Holly Rosman. I love Bradley, so that was fun to see.
[00:08:26] – Mason Paine: Bradley Cooper, he’s one of the cool people. I think after he did Rocket Raccoon, I really liked him even more.
[00:08:38] – Annanya Raghavan: He has his movie Silver Line and his playbook, which really highlights Philly culture and Eagles fan culture. And people were searching before the game Silver Line and his playbook, Philadelphia Eagles, and is Bradley Cooper an Eagles fan? I always loved seeing the Philly connections there.
[00:08:59] – Mason Paine: That is really cool. I have to think, I know we talked a bunch about the Super Bowl, but what about things for home? Were there any food trends.Going on?
[00:09:09] – Annanya Raghavan: Yeah. People always looking for food during the game. So the top search food near me, not surprisingly, pizza coming in at number one, followed by Chinese food and Mexican food. I was a little surprised to see Wing’s were number 4 on the list because it just seemed like the most notorious Super Bowl food. But looking into the Chicago area, the top search game date dip was a chili cheese dip. The top search chicken wing flavor was barbecue chicken. So for people who are there just for the Super Bowl party and the vibe. The food is a huge part of it.
[00:09:48] – Mason Paine: That is 100 % correct. I will say that 80 % of my time is eating during Super Bowl, and it’s whatever finger foods I could put on my plate and in my mouth. And most of the time it’s pizza. What about you?
[00:10:00] – Annanya Raghavan: My mom made a really good taco dip, so I love doing that. I was eating that during the game and then eating my feelings after the game. The taco dip, it was great. I love it.
