News Break 1: 12:51 to 14:23

Let’s take a brief break from the music for some music news.

The Mustang guitar that Kurt Cobain played in the “Smells Like Teen Spirit” video was sold, for much more than expected at the Music Icons auction. The left-handed instrument with the Competition Lake Placid blue finish was expected to go for $600,000 plus, but ended up selling for $4.5 million. Kurt said in one of his final interviews with Guitar World, that “I’m left-handed, and it’s not very easy to find reasonably priced, high-quality left handed guitars. But out of all the guitars in the whole world, the Fender Mustang is my favorite. I’ve only owned two of them.” Jim Irsay Indianapolis Colts CEO made the winning bid for the instrument.  Cobain’s family plans to donate a portion of the proceeds from the auction to Jim Irsay mental health awareness organization, Kicking the Stigma.

In other news, Hï Ibiza, one of the world’s most well-known clubs, is ringing in a new era with a special line-up of resident DJs and special events. David Guetta, Morten, and award-winning actor-turned-DJ, Idris Elba; will all be performing during the 18-week residency, which begins on June 3 and runs through September 30.

Not many people realize this but, Idris has been passionate about music long before he became an actor. In his younger days, he used to DJ at London’s underground circles. Now, he’s bringing his talents to Club Hï for an unforgettable experience.

Lets take our final break for some music news.

Harry Styles has had a busy year so far.  Not only did he release his latest album, Harry’s House, but he also made an appearance on the British children’s TV show Bedtime Stories. While on the show, he was dressed in polka dot pajamas and read a story by Jess Hitchman called In Every House, On Every Street. Many celebrities have read bed time stories on this series, including Tom Hardy, Ed Sheeran, Dave Grohl, Dolly Parton, Tom Hiddleston, Cat Deeley, Isla Fisher and Felicity Jones. By the way Harry achieved a milestone with his latest album. Within two hours of its release on Apple Music he earned the most first day streams for a pop album in 2022.

In other news,

The music industry continues to grapple with the challenges posed by streaming platforms, the Copyright Royalty Board has been asked to increase royalties for physical products. According to reports, this proposed 32% increase would raise the mechanical royalty rate from 9.1 cents to 12 cents per track for physical products. In a statement, Sony Music Publishing chairman Jon Platt said that the royalty rate-setting process is “currently the most critical issue facing songwriters and music publishers in the United States.” He went on to say that an increase in royalties would provide much-needed relief for those who are struggling to make a living in the music industry.
