Mason Paine: 0:01 - Job openings in the US hit a three year low, leaving job seekers uncertain in the age of AI. Learn how Google's Lisa Gevelber suggests using AI for job hunting and building essential AI skills. Thanks for joining me, Lisa.
Lisa Gevelber: 0:15 - Oh, it's so great to be here. Thanks for having me.
Mason Paine: 0:18 - Could you tell me what can be considered some basic AI skills that you can actually highlight on your resume?
Lisa Gevelber: 0:24 -Oh, sure. You know, employers are looking for AI skills more than ever, and so are people looking to learn AI skills. You know, AI can be used for all kinds of tasks at work, things like creating content or doing analyses or making a plan. AI's good at all of those things. And one of the best ways to show employers that you know your stuff on AI is to do a course and get a certificate. So at Google, we offer a course called Google AI essentials, and it will teach you all of the basic things you need to know to put the tools to work for you, to be more efficient and productive. And you earn our certificate at the end that really you can put on your LinkedIn or put on your resume to show employers that you know how to use these tools.
Mason Paine: 1:13 - Oh, that's nice. I'm glad you guys have a course. So then you will be able to answer, will there be any lesson about prompting, and is it even important?
Lisa Gevelber: 1:22 -Yeah, actually prompting is pretty important. The better job you do of asking the tool for what you want, the better the results are that you get. But actually prompting is kind of just like having a conversation with a tool. There are a few tips and tricks that you can learn about making effective prompts, like giving it a Persona, saying like, oh, pretend you're an expert on this topic and teach someone who's not an expert about a particular lesson. That's an example of giving a Persona. Or you can learn about prompting in terms of telling it what format you want the results in, you know. Please give me a summary of this report. Using bullet points.
Lisa Gevelber: 2:04 - And so prompting really is a pretty basic thing, but it's really important to learn the skill, because the better job you do asking for things, the better job the tool will do in giving you what you're looking for. And we do teach basic prompting in the Google AI essentials course, so it's really handy.
Mason Paine: 2:22 - Now, adding a skill to your resume is always a plus, but how is it helping people job switch?
Lisa Gevelber: 2:28 - Oh, yeah. Well, employers more and more are looking for people with AI skills. As a matter of fact, searches by people looking for jobs, one of the highest or most popular searches we see are how to use AI or how to learn AI or co...]]>Mason Vera Paine, the Unabridged Millennialfullfalse5:50The Need For A.I Policy and Regulation

Mason: Ai has become a major part of the tech industry, with companies such as IBM using it to replace their employees and other sectors considering doing the same thing. To date, no government has taken action against this technology, which raises the question, should we be concerned? Data protection law partner Will Richmond Coggin joins me to break down the regulations and policy issues with AI. Thanks for joining me, Will.
00:27 - Will Richmond: Oh, you're welcome.
00:28 - Mason: So AI, it's such a big thing right now, such an explosion. But do you think that right now that AI is going to stick around?
00:37 - Will Richmond: Definitely. We've seen a paradigm shift in the way in which AI has penetrated both popular consciousness but also the commercial world. The really big change this time is that you haven't got AI, which people are developing as an experiment to see what can be done. You've got AI with actual practical applications which is being deployed in real world environments and to solve real world problems.
1:08 - Mason: Now, you said that companies were experimenting with it. I know personally, one of the weirdest things that I saw with this experimentation was McDonald's. Mcdonald's is having its own server and you get to talk to it for a minute and then maybe a real person will come on and help you. Are there any other industries that it's strange to see AI in?
1:30 - Will Richmond: Yeah, I think it's certainly a bit of a risk at the moment for companies that are in the public service or customer service as their main model using AI because it's still a little unreliable and you definitely have those risks that the AI is going to say something unexpected or produce an output which damages your brand. That's one thing if it's an environment where people are tolerant of that mistake, but it's something where customers expect to be handled with a certain degree of courtesy, say, or to get correct answers first time to the problems that they're having. They probably don't want to feel like they're part of an experiment and they certainly don't want to be insulted or offended. I think that's probably one area that's surprising. The other is at the other end of the spectrum, which is where you've got AI being used for really complex, difficult decision making. For example, in the UK, there was an AI tool that was deployed by a local authority, so a local government body, to determine whether or not people that were receiving state benefits were potentially fraudulent, say, whether they were dishonestly claiming those. The AI wrongly identified large numbers of people as being high risk for fraud, and that resulted in them being accused wrongly and all sorts of unfortunate consequences on some of the most vulnerable people in society.

As we enter Cyber Security Awareness Month, it's more important than ever to protect our data online. Google Cybersecurity Expert, Alex Krasov gives tips on how to stay safe on line.
Mason Paine: With the progression of technology, we are more prone to online threats and hacking. Google security expert, Alex Krasov joins me to discuss how you can stay safe online. Thanks for joining me, Alex.
Alex Krasov: Thanks so much for having me.
Mason Paine: So tell me what exactly is Cybersecurity Awareness Month?
Alex Krasov: Sure. Well, Cybersecurity Awareness month is, in my view, the best time of the year. it happens during October and really is a month. Government organizations, tools, and really anyone to pay attention to cybersecurity and think about their safety online and what we can all do to stay a little bit safer online.
Mason Paine: Now, when you say safer, what exactly are you pertaining to? What are we being safe from?
Alex Krasov: Well, a big concern online, especially as we get into the holiday shopping season, are things like online. A lot of online scans will actually be phishing attempts. And that's phish with a pH. And whenever you're talking about phishing, you're talking about a bad actor trying to get some kind of personal information from you by posing as someone else.
Alex Krasov: That could be a password to one of your accounts. It could be your credit card information, your bank information. But you know about 90% of cyber. Actually start with a Phish attempt. So this is a very serious online scam and it can have a lot of ramifications for individuals.
Mason Paine: Now, it's funny you mentioned that my mother, she got a text message the other day from Amazon saying that her account needed to be verified and my mother doesn't have an Amazon account, so that's the only reason she knew that this was a trick. But sometimes it's not that easy. I know that sometimes these things can look very official. How can you tell, like are there little signs that will help people understand this?
Alex Krasov: Yeah, absolutely. As you say, it can be really hard to tell sometimes. So. When it comes to things like email, if you're using Gmail, Gmail actually automatically blocks 99.9% of spam and phishing emails, which means those never even make it into your inbox. But we all know, sometimes we get this as a text or sometimes an email slip through. What can you do? Well, one of the best things you can do is rather than clicking on a link that you think might be suspicious, Or you're not sure if it's from an official source, go directly to that account or that website. So let's say you get that text message about an Amazon account.
Alex Krasov: Instead of clicking the link in the text message, go directly to your Amazon account. Log in there and see if anything needs to happen. That way you know you're going to the official source rather than clicking on a link that might be posing as the official source.
Mason Paine: Now one of the things that I like to do is to use two step verification, but does, is that very helpful at all?
Alex Krasov: Yes.]]>Mason Vera Paine, the Unabridged Millennialfullfalse7:44Learn Here About Google’s Latest Hardware

Andrea Willis, Google Technology Expert gives us an inside look at what to expect. The lineup includes the Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, and the much-anticipated Pixel Watch. Additionally, we can expect new additions to the Nest smart home family.
Mason Paine: Google technology expert Andrea Willis joins me to discuss the search giant's latest generation of hardware products from new smartphones to smart home devices. Thanks for joining me, Andrea.
Andrea Willis: Thanks for having me.
Mason Paine: So tell me a little bit about, the Google Pixel seven and the Seven Pro. What's the difference between the two?
Andrea Willis: Yes. So this week Google is really excited to be launching our latest and greatest phones. And the difference between the Pixel seven and the Seven Pro is just that the seven Pro is a little bit bigger. So if you want a bigger screen, maybe you wanna do some email or you watch videos on it, that's an added benefit. But really, they're both great phones that have exciting new features on.
Mason Paine: Now I'm actually, I have the Pixel four xl, so I'm a little bit behind, but I'm in the market for a new phone. Now is the pro the same size as the xls?
Andrea Willis: So the pro is around the same size. But what's really exciting about the new phones are the features which both phones have. So for instance, if you are really, into photography, then there are incredible new things that you can do with the camera on both of the new phones. For instance, we have a feature where if you take a photo when it's a little bit blurry, you can un blur it with a few taps of your finger. You can also use a feature called Super Zoom, where whether you are at a concert in the stands or you are at a game. You can actually take zoomed in closeups of the stage of the court, and feel like you're really up close and personal. Now, one feature that is unique to the Pixel seven Pro versus the regular Pixel seven, is something that we call macro focus in the camera. So macro focus takes super zoom a step further, and lets you get to brush broke and raindrop detail on things of close. So if you happen to take a picture of a leaf on a rainy day, for instance, you would get the really beautiful up close and personal details on the camera if you had the pro, other than that's the camera. Very much the same. And they both have those exciting features.
Mason Paine: That is pretty cool. I’m wondering, can you use like them at the same time though? So you know how, if you like zoom in really close into something, it becomes a little bit blurry and pixelated. So on the, the pro, could you use the Super Zoom and then use the blurry image thing and would it work then?
Andrea Willis: You could. Oh, you could work. It could.
Mason Paine: Oh, that's pretty cool because that's usually my problem. I love to zoom in because I don't wanna move and, the picture comes out really bad. .
Andrea Willis: Yeah, so I think you would probably really, you said that you currently have a pixel, so you probably really enjoy, this update. And then we also designed it with inclusivity and accessibility in mind as.]]>Mason Vera Paine, the Unabridged Millennialfullfalse10:57Understanding Live Streaming

Live streaming has seen a huge uptick in popularity in recent years, but it's still a relatively new form of media. As it continues to evolve, what is live streaming and what are its benefits? Lynn Elliott, Senior Product Manager of Wirecast, is here to discuss.
Mason Paine: It's no secret that live streaming has exploded in popularity in recent years, but it's also important to remember that it's still a relatively new form of media as such. It has evolved rapidly and changed a lot over the past decade while senior product manager of Wirecast Lynn Elliott joins me to speak about all things stream.
Mason Paine: Thanks for joining me, Lynn.
Lynn Elliott: Thanks. Thanks for having me.
Mason Paine: Can you explain to me how streaming works and try to use the layman's terms?
Lynn Elliott: Yes. Sure. So live streaming is really, or the term streaming means the continuous transmission of video or audio from a host to a client. So this kind of works by breaking up the data into little bits, known as packets.
Lynn Elliott: you transmit those packets across the internet. So each packet is independently addressed and traveled separately. So imagine like, if you were trying to send a textbook to a friend, you would take out a page and send it and take out another page and send it. And these all might arrive at different times, but when it comes to streaming over the internet, Users or viewers like you, and I would use a player to kind of assemble all of those pages together in the right order, and then be able to watch that, or in this case in test textbook, read that, as a continuous piece of media.
Lynn Elliott: And so the internet has made this all possible, by the bandwidth that we have today is greatly improved over the past, you know, 20 years. And so you're able to send more and more higher and higher quality, bits of data over the internet. So then you can, watch that, as it, as it's live.
Lynn Elliott: So then there's, You know, the differentiation between watching something like on from Netflix that is, you're technically you're streaming something it's typically not live. It's something that's stored on a server somewhere. And you're getting those bits across the internet, in their packets and watching that stored media on your player, which happens to be your TV or your iPad or wherever you watch it.
Lynn Elliott: And then as compared to what we call live streaming, which is a live event. That's being streamed as it's happening. Live. The streaming is technically happening in the same way it's being encoded and sent as bits across the internet so that a player on the other end can, assemble those bits, and you can watch.
Mason Paine: Now I wanted to focus on the live streaming portion of this., what is a proper setup for that? I mean, could you just use your cell?
Lynn Elliott: Oh, yeah, sure. Lots of people use their cell phones and you can, you know, use an app like Facebook and Facebook has a feature called Facebook live. You can, you can click on that and that gives you everything you need to stream live to Facebook.

Google Technology Expert, Molly VandenBerg breaks down the latest product and tool announcements at Google I/O, 2022.
Mason Paine: Google's annual developer conference is a place to see the future of Google Android and all its products. And this year's IO conference looks to be no different Google technology expert. Molly Vandenberg speaks about some of the latest features and products from Google. Thanks for joining me, Molly.
Molly Vandenberg: Thank you so much for having me. So tell
Mason Paine: me what are some of the new things Google came out with?
Molly Vandenberg: I always, always an opportunity for us to showcase our latest innovation. And this year we announced some new devices, new privacy features and updates across the board, on our products to make them even more.
Mason Paine: One of the things I was kind of looking forward to was the pixel buds pro earbuds. Tell me about that one them.
Molly Vandenberg: I'm really looking forward to these two. So these are our new wireless earbuds that have active noise cancellation. So they're great. Whether you want to use them pay work meetings from home or get a workout in. And we're really looking forward to them hitting shelves in July. There'll be available for pre-order on the 21st, and you'll be able to get your hands on them on the 28th.
Molly Vandenberg: I really love the design of these. They fit nice and flush in your ear and therefore are really comfortable. And they also come in four different colors, which is pretty fun. So you can pick the one that best matches your style.
Mason Paine: Now, when it comes to earbuds, I know a lot of, doctors will tell you, Hey, don't have this kind of stuff in your ear. Cause it kind of ruins your, your hearing, which is true. Once your hearing goes, it never comes back. I'm just curious. Did Google put any features in to protect your ears.
Molly Vandenberg: It's really important that people protect their hearing. And I think you're right to say that people should have that top of mind. Of course, a lot of that is to come down into volume control and making sure that you're listening to things at a good level sound and that we're retuning it to fit that volume level, which I think is helpful to a lot of people who, if they do, you know, keep it down a little bit. They're still getting really good quality sound.
Mason Paine: Yeah, that's true. one of the things I noticed about it, which I was one of the features that I thought was pretty cool was that as you lower the volume, the high, mid, and low tempo volume, Adjust.
Mason Paine: So I'm like that, that, that's actually pretty cool because as you lower it, sometimes you can't hear certain things, which is why you end up raising the volume again. And it's like counterproductive to why you lowered it.
Molly Vandenberg: Exactly. And we call that volume ETQ and like you said, I think that that's going to help a lot of folks because it's going to ensure that they're still hearing what they want to hear without having to artificially crank up the ball.
