 Vinyl’s From The Past: 7:51 to 11:34I am going to take a brief break from Vinyl’s From The Past. In this limited run series, I will be exploring the pioneers that have shaped and influenced the EDM we have today. In this episode I will be featuring “Safri Duo”.



“Safri Duo” formed in 1977; their initial focus was on classical music. Later their style evolved with the blend of electronica and tribal. In 2000 they gained mainstream success with their release of “The Bongo Song”. Take a listen to it here.



“The Bongo Song” was featured in the 2000 Summer Olympics. The success of this song came from the fusion of tribal drums and trance. This caught the attention of Club DJs and even media like MTV Europe because no one ever heard the mixing of percussions and trance before “Safri Duo”.

Vinyl’s From The Past: 16:01 to 19:42I am going to take a brief break from Vinyl’s From The Past. In this limited run series, I will be exploring the pioneers that have shaped and influenced the EDM we have today. In this episode I will be featuring “Eric Prydz”.



Eric Prydz started out a DJ and Producer in the earlier 2000’s as a progressive house and techno DJ. He later relocated to Los Angles and gained a massive hit with the 2004 track “Call On Me”. Take a listen to it here.



“Call On Me” was a defining track for the EDM era with its influences in EDM and Pop. Eric sampled Steve Winwood hit “Valerie” which gave the track its catchy pop hook and merged new and old music. This sample also gave the song mainstream acceptance which allowed it to be played on the radio. “Call On Me” also had an iconic music video featuring suggestive choreography also made it the most talked about track. All these things combined pushed this song to mainstream success and made it influential in the further development of EDM.

Vinyl’s From The Past: 14:22 to 25:06I am going to take a brief break from Vinyl’s From The Past. In this limited run series, I will be exploring the pioneers that have shaped and influenced the EDM we have today. In this episode I will be featuring “Underworld”.



“Underworld” was formed in 1987 and consisted of Karl Hyde and Rick Smith. As a duo they created synthpop music. However in 1990 the group became a trio and add Darren Emerson. At this point they went from synthpop to progressive house and techno. In 1996 they had their biggest mainstream hit “Born Slippy.Nuxx”, which was on the “Trainspotting” soundtrack. “Born Slippy.Nuxx” captured the emotional and human element of the characters in “Trainspotting”. The use of vocals in EDM was new at the time because EDM tracks were largely instrumental. In addition, this track was a fusion and trance with its driving, repetitive. synth beats. This fusion blurred the lines with the genres.]]>

Vinyl’s From The Past: 10:56 to 17:41I am going to take a brief break for Vinyl’s From The Past. In this limited run series, I will be exploring the pioneers that have shaped and influenced the EDM we have today. In this episode I will be featuring “Joey Beltram”.



“Joey Beltram” started DJ-ing at the young age of 13 in Queens, New York. In 1990, Joey had his breakthrough hit “Energy Flash”; which became a classic. Take a listen to it here.



Joey used the Roland TB-303 bass synthesizer to craft the unique, spacey overtones of “Energy Flash”. This was innovative at the time. In addition to this, "Energy Flash" release, had a profound effect on the EDM techno scene. During this time, European techno had a firm grip on the genre but with the release of "Energy Flash", a bridge between American and European techno was created.



“Joey Beltram” became a highly influential figure in EDM and with his release of “Energy Flash” he helped shape the direction of what techno is today.

A pioneer of the electronic music scene, “Robert Miles” was a renowned DJ and Producer. He started his career DJ-ing in Italian clubs with his mixes later being played on local radio stations. It wasn't until 1995 that his name became widely recognized with the release of "Children". This track quickly gained international success becoming an instant classic. Take a listen to it here.



“Children” contributed to the emergence of dream house and trance by bringing a unique sound to the EDM genre. Robert’s track featured a soothing piano melody coupled with progressive beats, not as intense as many other tracks during that period of time. It was initially released in Europe but its popularity quickly spread worldwide, appealing to a global audience.

In 1998 three of the top names in French House music, “Stardust” was a supergroup comprised of Thomas Bangalter from Daft Punk, Alan Braxe as producer and Benjamin Diamond as EDM vocalist. Together these three created an iconic trio in the genre. It wasn't long before he began producing his own music, and in 2005 he was signed to the famous Anjunabeats label. Born in Harlem, New York, Richard Melville Hall started his music career as “Moby” in a punk band and then later as a DJ. His name was a tribute to his distant relative Herman Melville the author of “Moby Dick”. In 1990 “Moby” gained recognition with his track “Go”. Take a listen to it here.

In 1987, Jo Bogaert and Manuela Kamosi created “Technotronic” a musical project that featured Fashion Model Kilingi as their visual front.
